A police officer is often on the front lines in the war against drunk driving, placing his or her safety at risk for the good of the community. Such was the case with DC Motor Patrolman Anthony Simms who often participated in the department’s organized efforts to stop impaired drivers, a task he found very rewarding. Sadly, Officer Simms lost his life at the hands of an impaired driver who hit him, causing fatal injuries, as Simms participated in a special enforcement detail in the 9th Street Tunnel over Memorial Day Weekend, 1996.

In Officer Simms’ honor and to thank those enforcement officials who have done an outstanding job preventing alcohol-related traffic tragedies, WRAP introduced its Regional Law Enforcement Awards of Excellence for Impaired Driving Prevention at its December 1 Holiday Safe Driving Campaign kick-off in Alexandria. His widow, Pamela Simms, a lieutenant with the Metropolitan Police, presented the awards in her husband’s memory in an emotionally-charged ceremony. She expressed her gratitude to WRAP for honoring her husband and explained the irony of having the event at the Chart House. It had been her and her husband’s favorite area restaurant, and the last time she was there was with him on their wedding anniversary.

Lt. Simms presented eight awards to area officers who were hand-selected by their chiefs to receive the recognition. The chiefs of each department honored attended to recognize their department’s winner. Cellular One’s Lisa Woefel assisted in the awards presentation and gave winners cell phones and plaques in appreciation of their efforts.
